I recently read online that the Savoy Hotel in London has a room named the Claude Monet Suite. It is called this because it is adorned with images of Monet paintings and all of the furnishings and decor are colored to match the paintings. I would think that whomever would be lucky enough to stay in this suite must feel like it is the most romantic place on Earth.
This got me thinking about romance. Romance is hard to describe because everybody had their own interpretation of what it is. What does romance mean to you? What it romantic?
Remember the ending of Sleepless in Seattle when Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks finally met face to face at the top of the Empire State Building on Valentines Day? To me, that's romance. I cry every time. It's the thought that there is someone out there, your one true love, your soul mate, and that perfect meeting of coming face to face - gets me every time. Waterworks. (Happy love tears are beautiful : )
Romance for me would be cottage in the Cotswold's with a rose trellis and stone walkway. Maybe having a late breakfast in the garden...
On a gorgeous Spring day. Pink champange, crossoints, and fruit. Marvelous.
Romance could also be a long train trip through the mountains, with no sense or regard for time. Sounds heavenly. Why are we always rushing around anyway? Long naps, sharing a crossword puzzle, living an old fashion lifestyle with no cell phones....romance city.
But seriously - those are my fantasies. For real life (which is just as good) romance means the simple things. A beautiful pink carnation. Remember in elementary school on Valentines day all the kids sent carnations to each other? I still love these flowers. They are simple and always make my heart sing. Luckily for my hubby they are available in any grocery store...ha,ha.
Every morning, without fail, my hubby has my coffee waiting for me when I come into the kitchen. It's the first thing I see (besides him) through my groggy, half awake eyes. Sometimes I can't even talk because that part of me hasn't come to yet. I give him a kiss, take my mug of coffee, and back to the bedroom I go. This is the most romantic gesture in the world and I love him for it : )
I love candle lit dinners, but an impromptu pizza after a hockey game can be romantic too. Spontaneity is romantic. What else? Floral wallpaper, piano music, a pink toile bedspread, a walk on the beach, holding hands on the couch. All favorites of mine. I guess romance can be found anywhere. Even in a Disney movie (Lady and the Tramp - my personal favorite).
How about breakfast for dinner on a cold, frosty night. A special desert. Frank Sinatra. Laughing till you cry. Sharing a blanket while watching a movie. A song dedicated just to you - sung by the one you love. (weather or not they can really sing is irrelevant and if you knew my hubby you would know why : )
Romance doesn't have to cost tons of money and we don't need to travel to far away places to get it (although its nice to dream about that!). What's real is real. And this is real....
Let's hope we all find romance in the most unexpected places this Valentines Day. We have one week left, so let's start looking! Good luck ladies ~

PS I had intended to share with you my recipe for Chocolate Pudding Cake this week, but I've come down with a terrible cold. Actually I'm writing this post through a haze of vics vapor rub, crumpled tissues, and NyQuil (all very romantic by the way - oh yes, I'm a picture of romance right now). As soon as I'm better I will be back in the kitchen. I've already made Valentine promises that have to be kept so this cold of mine better clear up soon ~ fingers crossed!

ReplyDeleteAnd the question you pose is not an easy one to answer. It's interesting to notice that you mentioned Monet as art really moves me. When I saw Vang Gogh's Starry Night I cried and cried, trying to look and follow each brush stroke with my eyes... I find art and music very romantic... romance is within each one of us.
Romantic can be a simple thing, like getting a beautiful bouquet of roses, or a pretty gift... romantic is being able to appreciate the sound of birds singing on a snowy morning... the smell of apple wood burning in an open fire... remembering your first love and your innocence... romantic is setting on the rocks, on the seashore, listening to the sound of the waves and music brought by the wind.

I love this post! I agree, romance can be so many things. Jetting off for a spur-of-the-moment trip would definitely be romantic to me, but I like little gestures almost as much. That is so sweet that your husband has coffee waiting for you each morning!
